Handley & Zuijderwijk residence

Built into a challenging but beautiful hillside site, this very handsome home looks out over a valley of kanuka.

Two wings are connected by a central 'birdwalk' which flows from the entrance through to the bush beyond. The house is clad in a mixture of board & batten and macrocarpa weatherboard, stained in natural colours. This macrocarpa theme continues inside with TG & V ceilings and soffits complemented with white-washed OSB or dark-stained ply.

The owner's design prowess is evident everywhere you look, with unique finishings and a stunning colour scheme.

A tricky but very exciting and satisfying build!
Modern single-story house with black vertical siding and large windows surrounded by dense greenery under a cloudy sky.
Modern outdoor wooden patio area with stacked firewood, steps leading to a raised garden, and a beige cushioned sofa with two pillows under a partially covered wooden ceiling.
Modern wooden front entrance at night with vertical wood slats, a frosted glass door, wall-mounted lights on either side, potted plants on the left, and a wooden bench with firewood on the right.
Modern living room with large windows overlooking greenery, a beige sofa with cushions and a fur throw, a wooden TV cabinet with a flat-screen TV and decorative items, a carpeted floor, and a nearby black fireplace with a basket of firewood next to a step leading to a dining area.

Client perspective

Trusted, recommended, valued

"Working with Sam and his team was an absolute joy! We have ended up with a beautiful house that is better than we could have hoped and the build process was actually enjoyable. It was also delivered on time and on budget. Sam communicates well, he is efficient and organised and responds to emails / phone calls in a timely fashion. Sam and his guys take time to really think about the design details and craft things beautifully; they understand the importance of the little finishing details and they know that whatever they do will be looked at and lived with for many years to come. And we are pretty fussy! They take pride in their work and the guys seem to enjoy what they do - there is always a lot of singing on site!"
Thank you, Pep and Kate
